AI face checker

Was this face generated by AI?

Upload the photo. We read what the file says about itself, then an AI model looks at the picture.

What the file says

Generators often leave a note about themselves in the file. Some sign their output with Content Credentials, a tamper-evident record of which tool made it; others simply write an AI label into the file, which AI services in China must do. A signed record is proof, and we show who signed it. A plain label is a strong clue, because anyone can add one.

A face you meet online usually arrives without either: screenshots and social apps strip the record on the way.

What the picture shows

For most faces, only the picture is left to go on. An AI model trained on both real photographs and generated ones examines the image. It is Community Forensics, an open-source model from university researchers under the MIT license, tuned and tested on photos from current generators and current phones. We set its cut-offs so that a real phone photo rarely reads as AI.

When the signal is weak you get Inconclusive rather than a guess.

Where it struggles

Heavily compressed or resized copies, small images and screenshots of screenshots leave less to go on. A real photo that was edited with AI tools, a face swapped in or a sky replaced, can read either way, and a low score is not proof that nothing was changed.

Check the highest-quality copy you can find, and pair the verdict with where the photo came from.

Can it tell me which generator made the face?

It tells AI from real. When the file names its tool, or carries a signed record we can check, we show that too; otherwise the verdict is about whether the picture looks generated, not which model made it.

What about a face swapped onto a real photo?

That is harder. Most of the frame is real camera footage, so a swapped face can slip through. A low score is not proof the face was not edited.

What should I look at myself?

Skin with no pores, stray hairs or uneven tone; teeth that blur into one white band; reflections in the eyes that do not match the scene. One tell alone proves nothing, so weigh them together.

How accurate is it?

Every generator we test is listed on the test results page, with how often it is caught and how often real photos come back as AI. No single number covers every face. See the test results
