AI image metadata checker

What does this image metadata say?

Drop in a photo and we read what the file says about itself: AI labels, generator settings, and signed Content Credentials. Most files arrive with none of it, and we say so.

What metadata an image can carry

Image files can hold a lot beyond the picture: camera and phone details, editing history, and, increasingly, a record of whether AI made or changed it. Some generators write a plain AI label, some write their settings, and some sign a tamper-evident record.

We read all of it and show what we find, separating a signed record, which is proof about the claims the file makes, from an unsigned label, which is a strong clue.

What we read

We look for Content Credentials (the C2PA standard) and check the signature, naming the signer when it verifies. We read AI labels, including the ones Chinese services must write. We read Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI settings, and IPTC tags, which can carry a digital source type.

That metadata is often the clearest evidence there is, because it comes from the tool that made the file rather than from a guess about the pixels.

When the metadata is gone

Most images reach you stripped: screenshots, downloads and social apps remove it. No metadata found means exactly that, and it says nothing about whether the image is AI.

When there is nothing to read, the picture itself is what we judge, with the same honest limits as any other check.

More on what we check, where it can go wrong and what happens to your file: how it works.

Does a missing AI label mean the image is real?

No. A missing label proves nothing: the file may never have had one, or it was stripped along the way. It is one clue among several, never a verdict.

What are Content Credentials?

A tamper-evident record, built on the C2PA standard, that a tool writes into a file when it makes or edits it. When the signature verifies and the signer is trusted, it is real proof about how the file was made.

Which generators write labels or settings?

Many do. Some sign with Content Credentials, some write an AI label, and Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI often save their settings. Our accuracy page lists the generators we test. See the test results

Can it read camera EXIF?

Yes. Camera and phone details count as a clue that a photo came from a camera, never as proof, since anyone can copy or edit them.
