AI-edited photo checker

Was this photo edited with AI?

Upload a photo and see whether AI touched it, with the reasons. Generated and edited are different questions, and this page is honest about which one the detector can answer.

Generated or edited: two questions

A whole AI image is made from nothing by a generator. An AI edit starts from a real photo and changes part of it: a removed object, a replaced sky, a smoothed face, an upscaled detail. People increasingly ask the second question.

Our model was built and tuned for whole AI pictures. It can still catch many edits, because the edited area often carries the smooth, clean look a generator leaves, but it is not a dedicated edit detector.

Why edits are harder

An edit changes only part of a picture that is otherwise real. The untouched parts look like a normal photo, so the signal is smaller and more local, and the verdict can go either way.

A real photo with a removed object or a replaced sky can read as AI, or read as real, and both can be defensible. We frame the verdict as evidence, not proof.

What evidence the file carries

When an edit tool signs its work, the file can carry Content Credentials that record what was done, and that is real proof about the edit. Some tools also write an AI label or save their settings.

Most edited images arrive stripped, though, so the picture is what we judge. Treat the verdict as a clue, and weigh it with what you know about the photo.

Does it detect AI edits?

It catches many, but it was built for whole AI images, not edits. An edited real photo can read either way, so treat the verdict as evidence rather than proof.

What about a removed object or a replaced sky?

Those can read as AI or as real. The edit changes only part of a real photo, so the signal is smaller and the verdict can go either way.

How is this different from the AI image detector?

Same engine, different question. The image detector asks whether the picture was made by AI; this page asks whether a real photo was changed with AI, which is a harder question. Check whether an image is AI

How accurate is it?

Our test results page gives the catch rate for AI images and the false-alarm rate for real photos, each with the number of files behind it. Edits are harder than whole images, so weigh those rates with care. See the test results
